US Circuit Court overturns convictions of the Cuba 5!
A great victory for justice and the Cuban and American people united against
state terrorism.
"Victory for the Cuban 5
On Tuesday, August 9th, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta issued a 93-page decision ordering a new trial and change of venue in the case of the five Cubans who were convicted of spying in 2001. The unanimous three-judge panel’s opinion focused on community prejudice in Miami and remarked the trial came at a time when the United States and Cuba were in the middle of a custody battle over Elian Gonzalez and the airwaves were flooded with confrontational media coverage. The court also criticized the inflammatory statements made by the prosecutors in their closing arguments.
The five were convicted in 2001 for serving as unregistered agents of a foreign government and are serving sentences from 15 years to life in prison. They admit to spying on terrorist exiles in Miami to thwart terrorist attacks in Cuba, not the U.S. government.
The decision is an enormous victory for the Five who have been held in U.S. custody since 1998." Cubacentral.com
